John Betjeman left us in little doubt as to his favourite seaside town:
“Farewell, seductive Sidmouth by the sea,
Older and more exclusive than Torquay,
Sidmouth in Devon, you’re the town for me!”
In case you’re wondering, all of the photographs posted on this blog are of the beautiful Regency town where I live, overlooking the waters of Lyme Bay in Devon, England. The town is as known for its laid back bohemian atmosphere during the folk festival each summer, and its peace and tranquility in the winter. Its stunning Jurassic coastline is completely unspoilt by modern architecture; it has over 500 listed buildings, mostly from the Georgian period. My own home was built in 1830. I moved here to semi retire and write – but mostly to escape from the rat race! I’ve never regretted it. Do leave a comment – I like to hear from visitors!
Enjoy your visit! Best wishes from the Author, Jan Marshall.

Hi Jan
Thank you for your lovely photos of beautiful Sidmouth – particularly those of Rock Cottage! We noticed the article in the local paper about the sharp rise in its price since it was sold by the National Trust last year. Wondered if there had been any other comment about it?
Thank you again for such lovely images!
Penny
Hi Penny,
No other comments received about Rock cottage yet!
Hi Jan,
Your photographs of Rock Cottage are beautiful. May I ask permission to use “Rock Cottage from the Beach” in the 50 page A5 booklet I have just compiled on R W Sampson Architect?
I am just finishing it all off and it may become a Sid Vale Association Publication after a commitee meeting on Monday when that will be decided.
I plan to have it printed by the end of March 09.
Regards.

Hi Sylvia,
I have no objection to you using the photo. I’d be interested in seeing the booklet about R W Sampson – I have an interest in architecture.
Regards,
Jan
