It’s that time of year again! We’re approacing the fabulous all singing, all dancing, Sidmouth Folk Week!

Visit the official site here to download a programme or a leaflet about the folk week, for directions to Sidmouth, or to apply for Street trading - or just read about everything going on!

If you’ve been to Sidmouth Folk Festival before, you’ll know all about having a whole week filled with music, singing, dancing, pub sessions, workshops, concerts, storytelling, cream teas, lying on the beach, Late Night Extra, and sitting up late on the campsite enjying the bon homie. If you’ve never been, think of FolkWeek as more like a collection of small festivals in the same place at the same time, with something for everyone and a very friendly feel to it compared with some big festivals.

The line-up for 2008 includes Show of Hands, Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill, Grand Union, Jim Moray, Karen Tweed & Friends including Circa Compania, The Poozies and Lisa Knapp. Ceilidh bands perform nightly for the energetic, while there’s usually a Friday-night torchlight procession followed by a fireworks display.

Kennaway House was known as Fort House for almost 100 years. It was built in 1805 and from 1815 it was the home of the Kennaway family - including Sir John Henry Kennaway (MP for Sidmouth and East Devon who served in the House of Commons for nearly 40 years). After the Kennaways moved out the house fell on hard times and came near to being demolished in in the 19th Century. Fortunately. It was rescued by Edwardian benefactors in 1906, and renamed Church House. However, just before celebrating it’s centenary as Church House it was almost demolished again - due to being in a chronic state of disrepair.

In 2001, new trustees with the support of the community set about raising the one million pounds required for its restoration as a grade 2 listed building. It is now being restored and will open again in 2009. i am so glad, once lost, these beautiful buildings can never be regained. England has lost way too many already.

Today, when I was out and about I came across a DVD made from old film footage of Sidmouth - and on it were some still photographs and postcards. I thought them quite charming - so with the aid of a device that could grab the images from the DVD, Voila!

Have you noticed the house on the edge of the cliff? I’ll zoom in …

I would think that building is pretty expensive to insure!

Although the view it has over Lyme Bay is to die for! Perhaps I shouldn’t have said that, given how near the edge of the cliff it is!

One of the many outstanding and beautiful local properties!

Grade II Listed Edwardian Rock Cottage, Peak Hill Road is a former National Trust property, built in 1908, by the renowned architect, R W Sampson, who also designed many of the larger older properties nearby.

The Church of Sidmouth was granted in1212 by Bishop Marshall to the monastery of St Michael de Monte in Normandy, to which the Priory of Otterton was a cell. It was rebuilt in 1859/60 and everyhting was renewed except the tower and arcade on each side of the nave.
